One of the most thought provoking questions about Ghadeer is this:
Why did the Holy Prophet ﷺ stop tens of thousands of pilgrims in the intense heat of the desert instead of waiting until he reached Madinah?
The answer lies in a powerful verse revealed by Allah:
"O Messenger! Convey what has been sent down to you from your Lord; and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people..." (Qur'an 5:67).
This was not an ordinary instruction. Allah linked the delivery of this message to the completion of the Prophet's mission itself.
The Prophet ﷺ was returning from his final Hajj, and the pilgrims were about to separate and travel back to their lands. The message could not be delayed.
So, at Ghadeer Khumm, he ordered those who had gone ahead to return and those who were behind to catch up. Beneath the blazing sun, he stood before the massive gathering, took the hand of Imam Ali (a.s.), raised it high, and proclaimed:
"Man kuntu Mawlahu fa hadha Aliyyun Mawlahu"
"For whoever I am his master, Ali is his master."
After this declaration another verse was revealed:
"Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and chosen Islam as your religion."
(Qur'an 5:3).
Eid al-Ghadeer reminds us that divine guidance did not end with the Prophet ﷺ, but continued through the leadership of Imam Ali (a.s.) and the Ahlul Bayt (a.s.), the guardians of the Prophet's message.
The heat of Ghadeer lasted only a few hours, but its message has illuminated hearts for centuries.
