I know this may sound like a very niche career for us Khojas but I am sure I will not be alone in pursuing a career in the legal fraternity. I just want to find out about the scope of a legal career in East Africa? Your help much appreciated.

I would have liked to differ with you but who am I kidding, it’s true what you just said :) . I personally think as more and more multi national companies’ start investing in Tanzania the job market for lawyers should grow as well. Otherwise the only decent job prospects are for International lawyers as I see it at the ICTR in Arusha, but I hear that’s even closing down soon, as early as 2008  .

I have friend who was with me at primary school currently doing law at University of Dar es Salaam. I think that’s the only institution that teaches law in Tanzania isnt it :? ?

Our community has this huge misconception that law is all about those fancy court room dramas they see in Bollywood films and Indian dramas. Agreed criminal law is one of the foundations of a legal course but that doesn’t mean you have to be specialised in it. There are infinite other areas to put your expertise into. For those people who said they were interested in the business side of things like my self you can specialise in Company law, Tax Law, Employment law, Agency law, Partnership law, Landlord and Tenant law, Insolvency law, Property law, intellectual property law…the list just goes on and on… (And I haven’t made these up, these are specialised areas of law many of which are offered at my university) and anywhere did you see crime being mentioned? Proving guilt mentioned?
