KENYA National team pacer Peter Ongondo was named captain of the Nairobi Province Cricket Association NPCA) Select that arrived in Dar es Salaam for four One Day Internationals against Tanzania national team.

Ongondo, who featured for the national team during the International Cricket Council World Cup in West Indies last month, is the only experienced player in the squad.David Asiji, one of the team's two coaches, said Ongondo was picked to motivate the youngsters.

"Most of our players are under-19 and they need an experienced person like Ongondo to motivate them," Asiji said in Nairobi on Sunday. The Kenyans will play their first friendly against the Tanzania national team tomorrow at the University of Dar es Salaam Sports grounds.

The Tanzania cricket Association (TCA) chairman Zully Rehemtulla said all is set for the trials to start. "They have sent a good team and we hope we will gain by playing against them," Rehemtulla told The national team has been training in India as part of the preparation for the World Division III Cricket League in Australia.

Rehemtulla said the team would leave for Australia next Tuesday. In the Kenyan team, Keval Patel and Abdul Rajmi, at 16, are the youngest. Asiji said the purpose of the tour was to expose the juniors as they prepare for the under-19 ICC World Cup qualifiers scheduled for South Africa in August.

The World Cup will be held in England later this year."It is important to play against teams like Tanzania because they are the ones we will meet in South Africa," said Asiji.

"Any of the players who will do well in Tanzania stands a good chance of making the national team for the South African event," said Asiji. Some junior players are on a tour of Zimbabwe.

NPCA play their first match on Wednesday before meeting the hosts again the following day. More matches will be played on Saturday and Sunday and the Kenyans are scheduled to return on May 21.
