I recieved such a mail some time ago.
there are many recipes hence one does not know. BUT it is certain that there is a vanilla extract used. this extract is cheap if alcohol is used to extarct and more expensive for other solvents. hence it is probable that coke may contain some amounts of alcohol. Ihtiyat!

Coke is on the boycott list, making it haraam to be bought.

If it does contain alcohol are you telling me that food standard authorities around the world have all given it the green light to be branded as a “soft” drink as opposed to a “hard” drink?

very small amounts, in the o.?%

I remember reading somewhere that if a drink contains very little alcohol, less than some percentage, the company is allowed to hide the fact.

Hence better to avoid. :o

I have looked into the Coca-cola corporate website as it usually is the best place to start getting answers from! There are so many email hoaxes and scams circulating its really hard to differentiate the truth from something someone thought would be funny to pass around.

The link above clarifies some of the common myths that have been circulating around including the myth about Coca-cola supporting Israel.

Do look into 'Middle Easy myths & Rumours'.

None of the carbonated soft drinks brands of the CC company contain ingredients derived from mammals or poultry.
Alcohol derived from mammals or poultry? No way.

Coca-Cola honored by Israel in Atlanta

The American Israel Chamber of Commerce and the Government of Israel Economic Mission honored Coca-Cola and chairman Roberto Goizueta at the Israel Trade Award Dinner in Atlanta on May 29. Goizueta has worked for Coca-Cola since 1954, transferring to the Atlanta headquarters in 1964. In 1980 he was elected president and chief operating officer.

Coca-Cola has served the Israeli market for 30 years, refusing to abide by the Arab League economic boycott of Israel. For decades, this cost Coca-Cola the opportunity to sell its products in Arab countries.

[2] http://www.snopes2.com/cokelore/israel.htm

Prior to 1992, Pepsi had backed the other horse, choosing to service the lucrative Coke-less Arab markets in the boycott days. For its decision to stay out of Israel (and thus itself avoid being placed on the Arab League's blacklist), Pepsi faced continued criticism in the United States. In certain circles it was considered politically incorrect to be seen drinking Pepsi.

The Anti-Defamation League of the B'nai B'rith investigated claims that Pepsi was participating in the boycott of Israel. U.S. law prohibited American companies from taking part in this boycott, but the law was vague, and outright violations were hard to pin down. Nothing ever came of the investigations, and Pepsi was never placed on the American government's list of violators.

[3] On Tuesday February 19th 2002, Coca-Cola helped through a partnership with the University of Minnesota, fund a pro-Israel propaganda lecture given by Linda Gradstein. The event was cosponsored by zionist organizations like Friends of Israel, and National Hillel.

Coca-Cola Israel is sponsering training programmes for its workers from the immigrant communities, especially from the former Soviet Union, who have not been brought up in the zionist "culture" and who "often have difficulty integrating". The subject matter of the program includes the Israeli-Arab conflict. The workers attend weekly meetings where participants have to read and analyze texts. The organisation running the program, Meitar, is also funded by the Jewish Agency, and the Israeli Ministries of Education and Absorption.

[7] Coca Cola to build plant on stolen Palestinian land

Coca-Cola, in return for millions of dollars in tax breaks from the Israeli government, is to build a new plant in Israel on land stolen from the Palestinians. The new plant will employ 700 israelis.

The land in question is Qiryat (Kiryat) Gat. Intel is already facing possible legal problems for building its chip plant on the same stolen land. The Kiryat Gat industrial park is built on the lands of the village of Iraq Al Manshiya whose residents were ethnically cleansed in 1949 in contravention of International law.

[10] What else does Coca-Cola get up to?

Apart of its support for Israel what else does Coca-Cola get up to?

1. Double Standards - Coca-Cola Toxic in India

A Coca-Cola can bought in India is not the same as one bought in the US or UK - in India it will contain over 30 times the EU limit for pesticides and include banned substances blamed for birth defects and cancer.

2. Coca-Cola accused of killing workers in Colombia

Trade unions around the world have launched a boycott of Coca-Cola products, alleging that the company's locally owned bottlers in Colombia used illegal paramilitary death squads to intimidate, threaten and kill its workers

[11] Coca-Cola increase investment in Israel

18 October 2005

Haaretz has reported that The Central Bottling Company (Coca-Cola Israel) has bought the 51 percent controlling interest in the Tavor Winery, furthering its ambition to have a holding in every sector of the beverages business.

Central Bottling Company confirmed the report, which brings the soft drinks company smack into the heady realm of wine making, though refused to be drawn on the price paid.

For years the Central Bottling Company had been looking for a medium-sized or big winery to buy and turn into a subsidiary.

Tavor Winery an Israeli company is based on occupied Palestinian land at the foot of Mount Tavor, overlooking the Sea of Galilee.

Coca Cola recipe

Recipe 1
This recipe is attributed to a sheet of paper found in an old formulary book owned by Coca-Cola inventor, John S. Pemberton, just before his death (U.S. measures):

Ingredients:
1 oz caffeine citrate
3 oz citric acid
1 fl oz extract vanilla
1 qt lime juice
2½ oz flavoring
30 lb (14 kg) sugar
4 fl oz fluid extract of coca (decocainized flavor essence of the coca leaf)
2½ gal water
Caramel sufficient
Flavoring:
80 Oil orange
40 Oil cinnamon
120 Oil lemon
20 Oil coriander
40 Oil nutmeg
40 Oil neroli
1 qt alcohol

This recipe is from Food Flavorings: Composition, Manufacture and Use (2nd Ed.) 1968 by Joseph Merory (AVI Publishing Company, Inc., Westport, CT). Makes one U.S. gallon (3.8 L) of syrup. Yield (used to flavor carbonated water at 1 fl oz per bottle): 128 bottles, 6.5 fl oz (192 ml).

Mix 2,400 grams of sugar with just enough water to dissolve (high-fructose corn syrup may be substituted for half the sugar).

Add 37 grams of caramel, 3.1 grams of caffeine, and 11 grams of phosphoric acid.

Extract the cocaine from 1.1 grams of coca leaf (Truxillo growth of coca preferred) with toluol;dry the cocaine extract.

Soak the coca leaves and kola nuts (both finely powdered; 0.37 gram of kola nuts) in 22 grams of 20 percent alcohol.

California white wine fortified to 20 percent strength was used as the soaking solution circa 1909, but Coca-Cola may have switched to a simple water/alcohol mixture.

After soaking, discard the coca and kola and add the liquid to the syrup.

Add 30 grams of lime juice (a former ingredient, evidently, that Coca-Cola now denies) or a substitute such as a water solution of citric acid and sodium citrate at lime-juice strength.

Mix together 0.88 gram of lemon oil, 0.47 gram of orange oil, 0.20 gram of cassia (Chinese cinnamon) oil. 0.07 gram of nutmeg oil, and, if desired, traces of coriander, lavender, and neroli oils, and add to 4.9 grams of 95 percent alcohol.

Shake.

Add 2.7 grams of water to the alcohol/oil mixture and let stand for twenty-four hours at about 60 °F (15.5 °C). A cloudy layer will separate.
Take off the clear part of the liquid only and add the syrup.

Add 19 grams of glycerine (from vegetable source, not hog fat, so the drink can be sold to Jews and Muslims who observe their respective religion's dietary restrictions) and 1.5 grams of vanilla extract.

Add water (treated with chlorine) to make 1 gallon of syrup.

ABOUT VANILLA

There are three main commercial presentations of natural vanilla:

Whole bean
Powder
Extract (alcoholic solution; per Food and Drug Administration requirements, at least 35% vol. of alcohol)

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim.
About coke if its haraam or not, I will answer you. But first of all coke in the medical point of view is considered unhealthy and doctors usually say if its possible better avoid it.
Second thing, I don't know abt coca-cola having any alcohol, I will try checking on that to make sure. But all I know is that coca-cola is toxic. And all the Prophets(pbut) prohibited taking in intoxicants. And ALLAH(swt) himself restricted and made intoxicants haraam to us through them.
U might be asking why is coca-cola toxic? Its toxic because it has the most dangerous toxins in it. One of them is sugar(implicated in almost all modern diseases) and aspartame( a Monsanto manufactured carcinogenic toxin).
The conclusion is that Coca-cola is haraam. But don't know this because people don't like having an insight on these things. Especially in this world, nothing is to be trusted. People are always looking for different ways of making money and they end up creating haraam stuff and veil it with sweet and nice advertisements.

Eating too much carbohydrates is technically harmful, fried food is also harmful so why is it that I don’t see any posts banning these?
Esm'ail wrote:Second thing…I know is that coca-cola is toxic.
How  :?: If it was toxic it wouldn’t be fit for human consumption, people would be dieing from consuming it. As per your point that it contains a carcinogen why is it that no recognised scientific journal has published such claims. I can confess to have read articles about the long term harmful effects of soft drinks but this was over a number of years and these people were consuming soft drinks well above the normal average (more than a litre per day).

Intoxicants meaning stuff like alcohol, not ‘toxic’ stuff like chlorine :!:

Asalamalaykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh. :)
Carbohydrates are harmful in large amounts I do agree, but the human body needs carbohydrates in some amount. You must be asking urself why, because u need energy ofcourse and some other stuff.
But I'm 100% sure the human body does not need coca-cola. I don't know if its even required in our daily balanced diet(if ur a health freak that is). But carbohydrates is required. Thats why you cannot bann carbohydrates.

About fried food, it does not contain toxins(as coca-cola). Although it might be harmful in large amounts.
Another thing, if you put it that way, that means everything should be banned. Because anything in large amounts is harmful.
Whether it be beef, vegetables etc. But they are fine because they are healthy and not because if you take it in large amounts is harmful. :D

Second thing, about coca-cola being toxic. Let me tell you brother, coca-cola is toxic. But it doesn't mean that if you have 1,2,3,4 or 5 bottles per day ur going to die. Because the toxic is put in small amounts. Lets look at Gene/whisky for example, its a type of alcohol, do you knw that gene/whisky are toxic? actually containing toxin but people still drink and they don't die.
The toxins tht I'm talking about are not those toxins like cyanide, but rather toxins which destroy ur immune system and cause other diseases to ur organs like liver cancer.

For your last statement, does that mean when we talk about intoxicants it only means alcohol/getting drunk?
No, ur mistaking my brother. Intoxicants means that anything that is toxic to ur body and cause abnormal actions.
Just to end this thing, Is smoking cigarettes allowed? cuz u don't get drunk when u smoke and it doesn't have any alcohol in it.
Is smoking marijuana allowed?
Is injecting drugs in your body allowed?

Coca-cola claims that they use natural extract of vanilla. Natural extract of vanilla contains a minimum of 35% ethanol, otherwise it does not fall under the catagory of vanilla extract, as mentioned by Muhammad Mahdi. I think that is enough to make Coke haraam.

As for the meaning of intoxicant...it is defined to be anything containing alcohol or other sense-altering chemical like THC. It does not mean anything that is toxic. Although toxic substances are also haraam, toxic and intoxicant are 2 quite different things.

Asalamalaykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
I do agree toxic and intoxicant is different in meaning. I checked the dictionary. :)
But I wanted to make sure that my brother agrees with me that also toxic is prohibited in Islam.
Thanx for helping me out. :)

LONDON: Coca-Cola and Pepsi contain minute traces of alcohol, a study has revealed. According to tests carried out by the Paris-based National Institute of Consumption, more than half of leading colas contain traces of alcohol, Daily Mail reported Wednesday.

These include the brand leaders Coca-Cola and Pepsi Cola, while it is mainly only cheap supermarket versions of the drink which are alcohol-free. "60 Million Consumers", the French magazine, published the results of the tests in its latest issue.
