With an altitude of 8 degrees at sunset and horizontally also away from the sun by a similar amount and given a clear horizon with no obstructions and no clouds, the very thin crescent could be observed (see attached images).

The moon on the following day Sunday 20th is at 20 degrees altitude and with a thicker crescent, so should be clearly observable.

The moon has to be clearly visible to the naked eye; no optical aids allowed. Seems like Eid night is probably Sunday.

With regards to the moon, if the moon is sight-able by say an amateur telescope, then it is sight-able by the naked eye.

This is simply because its so close, that a crescent that can be seen by an amateur telescope or binoculars can also be seen by the naked eye.

Of course, like Sister Fatimah and Dr. Jiwaji mentioned, the moon will be very close to the sun and chances of spotting are slim (but possible) on Saturday evening.

Not quite so. There's a few people who moon-hunt every month to be able to declare it a new month. And according to one of them, there are times when you can see the moon with binoculars but you can't see it with your usual 20/20 vision, even though you're looking smack at it. In such situations, you can not declare it the 1st night of the new month.
