I invite Muslims all over the globe to consecrate the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadhan as 'Quds Day' and to proclaim the international solidarity of Muslims in support of the legitimate rights of the Muslim people of Palestine. "Imam Khomeini, Ramadhan 1399AH (August 1979)
The Palestinian struggle – particularly its armed struggle – and the occupation of AL-Quds has captured the imagination of Muslims.. For how long will the world block its ears in order not listen to the shedding of the Palestinian blood at the hands of the occupiers. Should not the Palestinian people enjoy their right in living free on their homeland like all other peoples in the world? The international legitimacy to which we were called upon by the world to recognize and cling to is being tread on every day in Palestine by the occupation army and its military escalation and the siege they impose on cities, villages, camps, causing the bloodshed of the Palestinian people by the blind military machine bent on destroying the Muslim people and Masjid al- Aqsa.
Thus a large part of the attention when it came to Palestinian solidarity is on Masjid al-Aqsa. The declaration by Imam Ruhollah Khomeini of the last Friday of Ramadan as Yaum al-Quds (Jerusalem Day) is an annual commemoration of the plight of dispossessed Palestinians. For all Muslims, the Masjidul Aqsa in Jerusalem holds the most important place after Mecca & Medina.
QUDS DAY reminds all Muslims that the oppressors have trampled on Muslim Lands and their quest for domination is not limited to Jerusalem only, but to even greater part of the Islamic Lands as is evident now with the events in Iraq and subsequent harassment to Islamic Republic of Iran.
'It is in this context that we celebrate the day of Quds. Throughout the world we celebrate the day through procession and speeches, reminding ourselves, the Muslim Community and indeed the entire world about the plight of Masjid Al-Aqsa and the land of Palestine. The plight Jerusalem and of Palestine itself is symbolic of the plight of all oppressed States and nations the world over, and indeed, the greatest of such symbols -- symbolising the oppression of the arrogant world powers over the weak States -- as nowhere on earth do they more effectively demonstrate their wickedness and barbarism than in the land of Palestine.
We take this opportunity of Quds day celebrations to show our solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Palestine, and with all the oppressed peoples of the world, who are made to face plights similar to those of the Palestinians. Despite all the vicious attacks made on Muslims, we will never give up the struggle to regain our rights. We will never bow and surrender our dignity.
As a parting thought we all wonder why all this oppression and subjugation of Muslim people and their lands is happening and why the Muslims are so indifferent to these events.
Late Imam Khomeini below gives us indeed a food for thought when he addressed the students in Teheran on 13 July 1972 .
If the Muslim states and peoples had relied on Islam instead of relying on the Eastern or Western bloc and had paid attention to the luminous and liberating teachings of the Noble Qur’an and then practiced those teachings, they would not be enslaved today by the Zionist aggressors, nor terrorized by American Phantoms, nor at the mercy of the satanic cunning of the Soviet Union. It is the gulf between the Muslim states and the Noble Qur’an that has plunged our people into this dark and catastrophic situation and placed the destiny of the Muslim peoples and countries in the hands of the treacherous policies of imperialism of the right and the left.
In a nutshell this is due to the lack of reliance on Islam has caused these catastrophes.
Indeed Our heart lies for the oppressed people of Palestine and all Muslim people, and let us all pray that Al- Quds is liberated.
May Allah offer us strength Amen.
