Dar es Salaam has been hit by some of the heaviest rains in 57 years (as per the Tanzania Meteorogical Agency)!

Here is how user wendy555 summarized it @ http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/dar-es-salaam
This is the fourth day of continuous, excessive rain in the city of Dar Es Salaam. The rain started pouring on Monday morning leaving roads slick and in some places flooded and blocked off. The trend continued on Tuesday, then Wednesday, and here’s Thursday morning and there is no sign of it stopping or slowing down.

The rain has caused more damage than was expected as more than 12 lives were lost, and many ill-built homes collapsed under the force of the rain. It has become a struggle to drive down the streets of Dar, both tarred and non, as the water levels continue to rise by the day. The city is “temporarily paralyzed” as even the sports stadium is lightly flooded by the rains, halting all plans for activity for perhaps the rest of this week. Some of the areas which were hit the worst are the Kinondoni and Mbezi regions.

The rains were strong enough to take down one bridge, and damage another. Many people are wondering and worrying about whether the destruction will continue at this rate. This also brings the development of Tanzania’s infrastructure into question. Why would a 3-4 day downpour destroy roads and bridges?
