"The Iranian nation and authorities will conquer the heights of progress and dignity and resolve the existing problems through unity, faith, vigilance, rationality and knowledge," the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei told an audience of Iranian officials, including the President, the Speaker, the Judiciary Head, the Head of the State Expediency Council, the Cabinet members, the Majlis representatives, judicial officials, military commanders and other prominent political, cultural and religious figures on Monday, 19th June, 2006.

The Leader by reminding the audience of the spiritual and ethical issues and delineating the concept of gratitude in the Islamic thought, made appraisals about the political, economic, cultural and international status of the country and expounded the principles of the Islamic Revolution, calling on the officials to show prudence, make untiring efforts and work selflessly in order to boost affinity and unanimity.

Ayatollah Khamenei considered "excessive optimism or pessimism" as misleading in appraising the situation in the country.

The Leader then touched on existing realities in various foreign and domestic issues, noting that the great, unbroken string of achievements is one of the most outstanding and positive features of the country and the System.

He pointed to other positive features, mainly the spirit of hope and liveliness in people, the governance of a determined and striving administration, the dignified position of the Islamic Republic in the international scene, the scientific achievements, the developing national infrastructures, the existing political calm, the failure of enemies to incite religious, tribal and sectarian discords and the harmony and unanimity among the Three Branches of the Government.

"Besides the long list of achievements and positive points, there are acute needs and problems to resolve and due measures must be taken and multiple efforts must be made to solve them," Ayatollah Khamenei asserted.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution pointed to creating of jobs, curbing of inflation, outreaching to underprivileged areas, launching serious combat against corruption, safeguarding investment security, rationally consolidating the international status of the System and purifying the cultural image of the country, as the priorities towards which the principled administrative and legislative branches, along with the other bodies, must take resolute and unstoppable strides, by perseverance of the principles as well as due planning and enduring efforts.

He considered running of the key pillars of the country through the principle of Islamic doctrine or "Principlism" as it is generally called, a great Divine blessing. He added that concept of Principlism is not a party or political current facing other political currents. Therefore he said, dividing political groups to Principlist and Reformist or other titles is not appropriate, because every one and every current which is interested in and committed to the fundamentals of the Revolution is regarded a principlist, whatever the title.

Ayatollah Khamenei then pointed to eight parameters of Principlism, adding that the most important parameter is faith and the Islamic and revolutionary identity.

"The administration and different cultural bodies must promote an insightful and steadfast faith, bereft of superstition and wavering thoughts, in the minds of the young and growing generation in order to consolidate the belief in religion, the revolution, the System, the people, independence, national unity and the prospects ahead, in the hearts and minds of the people," the Leader asserted.

Ayatollah Khamenei referring to the Qur’anic verse: "and argue with them in ways that are best", called for using the best methods in arguments with the followers of different views, adding that the faith Principlism calls for, never and by no means, fans the fire of sectarian fanaticism.

"We must present the Islamic identity void of any superstition and diversion to the Muslim nations and intellectuals through religious dynamism and methodical exploration of newer thoughts and ideas from the treasure trove of Islamic resources," Ayatollah Khamenei stated, calling on the audience to boost the current of Principlism in the world of Islam by hoisting the flag of fraternity of the Islamic Ummah and promoting ethical virtues.

He lambasted the deviated mindset that once existed in Afghanistan and now represents the terrorist network in Iraq, adding that these individuals consider all people as renegades and depict a violent and frowning image of Islam. Nevertheless, true Islam, whose flag is hoisted by the clear, new and dynamic ideas of the late Imam Khomeini, sweetens the mouths of nations and presents true Islamic and revolutionary faith and identity to them.

As another parameter of Principlism, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution pointed to the concept of justice, adding that economic growth must catch up justice since any idea that first tries to pursue economic development and growth and then turns to dispensing justice, is not logical.

Ayatollah Khamenei delineated the aspects of justice as reducing the social gap, creating equal opportunities, encouraging sincerity, harnessing embezzlers of the national wealth, effectively combating corruption and nepotism, promoting justice in the government, especially in appointments and removals, and paying attention to underprivileged areas.

"Carrying out justice demands resolution, the shunning of reservations, having public relations, leading a humble life, serving people and purifying the self," the Leader asserted.

Ayatollah Khamenei described the full independence of the country as another parameter of Principilism, adding that any current or party, which fails to pursue freedom from the imposed octopus of Western culture and shows indifference towards the politico-economic independence of the country and the nation, is not regarded as Principlist.

He pointed to boosted self-confidence in various fields as another parameter of Principlism, urging campaign against the chronic self-denial imposed on the country for decades.

Ayatollah Khamenei described "scientific jihad" as another parameter of Principlism.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution expressed pleasure with the resolve of the students and the youth in creating and boosting the movement of "science production," adding that such expectations are necessary but not adequate.

"We must take on greater works and newer domains and multiply the scientific wealth. In this way, the Iranian youth will be able to make the job by relying on the self and innate talents, provided the administration provides a favorable ground," Ayatollah Khamenei said.

He referred to the consolidation of freedom and freethinking as another parameter of Principlism, adding that freedom is one of the great divine blessings of which the freethinker is a main branch since without freethinking, the scientific, intellectual and philosophical growth is impossible.

Ayatollah Khamenei stressed freedom of thought and opinion, urging the authorities in the seminaries, the universities and other cultural surroundings, not to deal through uproar with individuals who present new ideas, but to provide the ground for the growth of thoughts and ideas.

He made distinction between true freedom and the enemy's efforts under the cover of freedom, saying that the enemy should not be left free to disseminate poisonous thoughts.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution referred to reformism in its true sense as another parameter of Principlism, adding that Principlist reforms and reformist Principlism are intertwined and different from American reforms and those of the deposed ruler Reza-Khan, which are actually annihilation, rather than reforms.

He considered the Constitution as the criterion of reforms, adding that reforms must be criterion-oriented and based on Islamic and Iranian values and ethics.

Ayatollah Khamenei said it was necessary to improve methods and well-phased objectives and decisions, adding that true reforms are completely different from attempts to ‘destructuralize’ the society and campaign against the Constitution and Islam.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution referred to the country's economic progress and improving the people's life conditions as the eighth parameter of Principlism, adding that supporting investment, fighting joblessness, creating jobs, promoting production, serious combat against smuggling and corruption, creating sustainable and transparent economic regulations, global marketing, proper use of oil, and harmonized attention to the country's strategic plans are among the outstanding issues in this regard.

He said internal weakness and external plots result in certain challenges, adding that no doubt, today most of the external challenges arise from the opposition of America to the Iranian nation.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the Global Arrogance and the American Administration consider the Middle East as very important, adding that in this sensitive region, the Iranian nation has stood against the oppressive approach of the US by not only establishing the Islamic Republic but has actually made Washington go crazy.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution referred to the failure of US in its hard and abrasive attempts to subvert the Islamic system though imposing of the (8-year) war (by courtesy of Saddam) and economic embargo, as well as its seemingly soft and covert attempts to subvert the Islamic System through cultural incursion. He added that other conspiracies continue to come up, but the nation and authorities will make the country and the system immune and conquer the heights of progress and sublimity one after the other through unity, faith, rationality, prudence, vigilance and seizing of opportunities.

Ayatollah Khamenei urged authorities and activists in different fields to follow self-purification and spirituality by expressing gratitude for the endless Divine blessings. He said self-purification and spirituality should be considered as the greatest duties of people and especially of the authorities.

Ayatollah Khamenei described acknowledging of Divine blessings, paying proper attention to them without being negligent, considering blessings as belonging to God, thanking God and using His blessings as a ladder of progress and sublimity, as the main pillars of gratitude that cause the Divine blessings to multiply.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution referred to national dignity and independence, the burgeoning talented youth under the auspices of Islam and the Islamic Revolution, national self-confidence, precious resources and reserves, ample opportunities to serve people and the religious and spiritual milieu of the country, as among the incalculable blessings. He said gratitude to God for them will make these blessings continue and increase by the grace of God.

Note: Principlism is the socio-politico-religious doctrine based on the pure and fine Divine teachings manifested in God’s Revealed Word, the Holy Qur’an, as well as the words and deeds of the noblest messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad (SAWA) and his infallible progeny (may Allah bless them). The doctrine was revived in the contemporary era by the Father of the Islamic Revolution and the Founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the late Imam Khomeini (may his soul rest in peace) and followed by his successor, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.
