Young Muslim women discuss religion and culture on The Agenda with Steve Paikin Friday February 1, 2008
http://www.tvo.org/cfmx/tvoorg/tvoutils ... =theagenda
Young Muslim women living in North America speak out about the challenges they face as they try to strike a balance between the religion they practise and the wider culture they experience outside the home. For this discussion on Friday February 1 The Agenda with Steve Paikin is bringing guests from across the continent together by satellite.
The discussion will also look at some of the myths and realities of Muslim women. Are their choices cultural or religious? Why do some Muslim women wear a headscarf and others do not? Is the hijab a personal statement or a symbol of oppression?
Steve Paikin's young guests include:
- Ausma Khan, editor in chief of Muslim Girl magazine (Los Angeles)
- Saffiyah Ally, journalist and associate editor of the online forum altmuslim (Toronto)
- Gilary Massa, vice president, Equity, York University Federation of Students (Toronto)
- Abeer Al-Azzawi, creator of Queendom Hijabs, an online hijab shopping site (New York)
- Zaynab Aden, freelance writer and Barack Obama supporter (Washington).
- Salma Al Atassi, Syrian-born grade 12 student at City School (Toronto)
- Katherine Bullock, lecturer at the University of Toronto at Mississauga and author of Rethinking Muslim Women and the Veil
(Toronto)
