Here is what I currently use:

Camera: Nikon D40

Lens: 18-55mm & 55-200mm

I also have some other cameras, but I hardly use them anymore.

So you got another D40? Must love it quite a lot.

I have a Canon 400D with the following lenses
Canon EF 18-55mm

Sigma 150mm Macro lens (for insects)

And Canon 50mm f/1.8

Very pleased with the results but unfortunately its now outdated with the flashier HD video recording models.
Anyone with those?

I am really comfortable with the D40. So thought will get it until I can afford the D90 :D

Yeah, plus the live on-lcd previews.

Have you tried astro photography with your 150mm

I had a 70-300 mm which I recently sold.
I tried shooting the moon with that. Got some pretty decent pictures but I think i left them all in TZ on my desktop.

My Nikon Coolpix was stolen. That is when I decided to buy an SLR.

Re the cybershot, yes most point and shoots give pretty good pictures at usual, normal focal lengths. But try macro or animal photography with that and you will come to know the limits.

Previously I used autostitch, which is free but not open source.
The final commercial version of autostitch is called autopanopro.

Currently I mostly use PTgui, again not open source.
I have seen some people using Hugin and Emblend. I think these are open source but IMO a bit more difficult to use.

Stacking, are you referring to focus bracketing?
If so, I use combine ZM.

For HDR,
photoshop or photomatix.
