The following narration is attributed to which sahaba of the Holy Prophet
during the life of Rasulullah (s) and reign of Abu Bakr Siddique and the early reign of Umar, we continually practised Mut'ah, until someone did something subject to his own opinion.
This sahaba was also present and visited Imam Hussein (AS)'s shrine during the first arbaeen

Who did the 7th Imam, Imam Musa Kazin (A.S), tell to act insanely in order to save his life from Haroun's punishment after which he, without fear of danger and in amusing ways, protected himself from tyrannies?

Bahlool, (ordinary known as Wahab) was the son of Umroo and came from town of Kufa. He was one of the staunch companions and students of Imam Jaffer Sadiq (A.S.). By his close association with the Imam, he attained a high status in Islamic jurisprudence (FIQH) and various sciences.

He was from the tribe of Bani A’aman, the same tribe, which Haroon Rashid – the famous Abbasid Caliph belonged. At one time Haroon was misguided by his people that Imam Musa Kazim (A.S.) was planning along with his companions to raise up against him. Therefore he invited the Ulemas and Muftis of the time to issue written fatwa permitting the Caliph to execute the Imam. On the strength that it would be tantamount to causing bloodshed in the country, the Ulemas were misled to issue the fatwa.

However, when this question was referred to Bahlool, he became deeply concerned as to how to save from implicating himself with this grossly unjust and exaggerated fatwa. He therefore pretended himself to have become insane so as to avoid from associating himself with this great sin.
It is also mentioned that in reply to a question in connection with this fatwa, Imam Musa Kazim (A.S.) had replied and intimated his advice to his close companions in a coded message by writing merely one Arabic letter JIM. This was interpreted differently by his trusted followers. One understood it to mean “JALA WATAN” i.e. ‘migration’ and accordingly he departed from his place of residence to settle elsewhere. Another understood it to mean “JEHAD” i.e. “fighting a holy war” and he came out to fight the Ulemas and was ultimately killed. But Bahlool interpreted it to mean “JUNOON” i.e. the advice of the Imam was to show up his appearance before the people of that of insane and mentally unbalanced person. Accordingly he did so and became known as “BAHLOOL ALMAJNUN”.

During the time of the rule of Haroon Al-Rashid the situation of the followers of Ahl-ul-Bayt was very delicate. It was a grave risk of life for anyone to express his true feelings and propagate the teachings of his rightful Imam. Therefore, Bahlool though outwardly behaving like a madman (to protect his life), went on propagating the true message of Islam.
