From the little I have read and seen Bahrainis are follwoing in the footsteps of Iran and Egypt.

Is it permissible according to islamic law to do so given the desperate conditions?

Actually, the Tunisian revolution started with a self-immolation. This was followed by the protests and numerous other self-immolations around the Arab world.
There have been over 20 such deaths.

The Iranian Revolution took more than a year to complete and led to the death of so many. If the self-inflicted death of one has the power to overthrow so many governments and change the entire arab world, wouldn't it be justified?

immolation means killing or offering as sacrifice.
self-immolation means doing it to oneself.

What started the Tunisian revolution was a man who was humiliated by a female officer and so he went to a govt building and burnt himself alive in front of an audience. People were touched, horrified by this and started protests against the govt
