First Introduction

Every human being has three most powerful faculties in them. These faculties in the ‘Arabic term are known as قُوّة which means: “Force”, “Strength” or “Power”.

1. The Faculty of our Intellect – The Mind
This faculty or قُوّة is the most important from the other faculties because it differentiates us from Animals. It enables us to think and differentiate from right and wrong, truth and false, real and fake, and…

2. The Faculty of our Senses – Hearing, Seeing, Smelling, Tasting and Touching.
This is also a very important faculty قُوّة in all human beings. This faculty is constantly in use by us in our daily lives, even in our sleep.

This is the only faculty that is an open gate for Satan (شیطان) to misguide us from the pure path of ‘Allah (s.w.’a) and it is through Piety and abstinence (تقوا) that we can protect and safeguard ourselves from him, which we will discuss in the Ethical lessons insha’Allah.

3. The Faculty of our Soul – نفس
This is the most difficult faculty in all of us in terms of understanding and nurturing it. Our soul is divided into many stages. The main three stages that we already know about are:

a. The Lowest Soul - النَّفْسَ لَأَمَّارَةٌ بِالسُّوءِ [the (human) soul is certainly prone to evil] – Yusuf: 53
b. The Higher Soul - النَّفْسِ اللَّوَّامَةِ [the self-reproaching spirit] – Al-Qiyaamah: 2
c. The Final Soul - النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ [the righteous soul] – Al-Fajr: 27

We will discuss all of these in details insha’Allah.

Wal-Hamdulillahi Rabbil ‘Aalameen
as-Salaamu 'aleykum warahmatullah
