Imam 'Ali ['a.s] says:

"Abstinence in the world is reducing aspirations. And gratitude for all blessings is avoiding everything which God - the Honorable, the Exalted - has forbidden. Whoever strains his body has pleased his Lord, and whoever doesn't strain his body has disobeyed his Lord."

A Short Introduction:

Our beloved Imam ['a.s] says: Abstinence in the world is reducing aspirations. What we understand by this is that the world is a place of glitter, and as for one intends to reach the Almighty 'Allah, one needs to practice abstinence in the desires for this world, which is a false glitter. He then continues to say about avoiding the forbidden, which is a higher level to abstinence, or hand-in-hand. I mean, once a person has abstained himself from the desires of this world, obviously in the heart, he should either then, or at the same time, start to act upon avoiding the forbidden which 'Allah has explained clearly in the Qur'an. This causes a person to reach to the highest of the peaks. At the third level, which is the final stage, the Imam stresses about straining or struggling with these two: Abstinence from the desires of this world and avoiding the forbidden. Once a person struggles with himself on this path, has surely pleased his Lord, but one who fails to follow these, or even one of them, then he has surely disobeyed 'Allah.

Let's pray to 'Allah to put this into our actions and help us become better people and ease our way and journey towards His Throne, insha'Allah.

Imam 'Ali ['a.s] also says:

"Whoever raises his aspirations shall do wrong."

A Short Introduction:

It is very obvious that whenever we tend to raise our aspirations, we don't get tired of it and hence it goes on until it piles up mountains of problems.
